In addition to serving as governor of Shanxi Province, viceroy of Huguang, Liangguang, and Liangjiang, and a member of the Grand Council, he advocated controlled reform and modernization of Chinese troops. In 1905, he played a big part in abolishing the Imperial examination system. During the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards destroyed his tomb. He was reburied in 2007 after his remains were rediscovered.
