一位來自英屬圭亞那的黑人工程師，因久久無法覓得工程師的職務，便決定受聘前往倫敦貧民區-東區的一所中學擔任短期的教職。不幸的是得面對一群來自弱勢家庭且個性頑劣的學生；他於是決定先摒除一般的學科課程，開始教導學生日常生活的基本禮儀和規則，並從旁給予協助。由於本身是個黑人，學生們根本不把他放在眼裡，在歷經多次的衝突和誘導之下，學生們逐漸建立起自信心，愛心與耐心也化解了師生間的矛盾。但就在雨過天晴之際，這位用心良苦的老師終於等到了工程師的聘僱通知，他會接受新職位，還是會留下來繼續春風化雨........
